Mike Casil for Kahālāwai

Kahālāwai…

It is that divine realm where heaven and earth meet. It is that space where ocean and sky unite. It is the corridor where night becomes day and day becomes night… where past, present and future merge. Kahālāwai draws our gazes beyond us and tugs at our na‘au to reach ever-forward.

Kahālāwai….

Another name in recent history for Maui Komohana – the western mountain range of our island where peaks, ridges and rain clouds converge. Where the waters of Nā Wai ‘Ehā emerge to tumble forth…giving life to the land, people and sea.

Kahālāwai….

The combined musical talents of Josh Kahula and Pi‘ilani Arias who embody the spirit and essence of their chosen name. Over the years, these two young men have established themselves as musicians and singers who are able to move effortlessly between the Island Music, Reggae and traditional Hawaiian music genres. Now, in this collection of old and new Hawaiian language compositions – they continue to push themselves forward into the realm of blending the past and present. In doing so, they bring their kūpuna and the collective experiences of the Hakumele into the here and now – through lyric, voice and music.

So come with me on this journey with them. E hāele mai. Let us sit, listen and be inspired as we gaze toward the endless horizon… Kahālāwai.”
